The "must see" places around Hafling
The seven places that we love in summer
1. Merano 2000
The largest cable car system in South Tyrol takes you to the top in just 7 minutes, right to the heart of the Merano 2000 hiking area - a truly superb outdoor playground. But that's not all!
You'll find 19 hiking trails and 7 imposing rocky giants, alpine lakes with crystal clear water, high pastures and mountain hut restaurants. And then, there's a wide choice of trails for professional, expert or amateur mountain bikers. And why not try out the famous Heini Holzer via ferrata - also suitable for families with children. The final touch for your fun day out is an exciting ride on the Alpin Bob!
2. Sulfner Weiher
0:40 h | 3,9 km | from Hirzer 2781
In a sea of white water lilies, colourful dragonflies, singing toads and splashing tadpoles have found a true paradise. Not only nature thrives here splendidly, but also man. The Sulfner Weiher is a very special place, basically an energy source that brings your body, mind and soul back into harmony.
3. St. Kathrein church
1:00 h | 4,4 km | from Hirzer 2781
Anyone who decides to walk a little further than the Sulfner Weiher will be rewarded: On a hill, in the middle of a green field, framed by the local mountains and so many grazing Haflinger horses, you can see the Romanesque Höhenkirchlein “St. Kathrein in der Scharte”. A good photo opportunity – especially in autumn.
4. Knottenkino (Natural Cinema)
1:00 h | 2,9 km | Verano
Not your typical cinema with Hollywood blockbusters with all its stars, rather the best films nature has to offer: Sit down on the “cinema chair”, lean back and admire the extraordinary panorama with a view of Etschtal, the giant mountains of the Dolomites and the Ötztal Alps, from the Texel Group to the Brenta Group in the south.
5. Haflinger waterfall
0:47 h | 2,5 km | from Hirzer 2781
The newly created waterfall path winds along the course of the stream to an observation point with a direct view of the small waterfall.
6. Haflinger adventure trail
0:38 h | 2,2 km | Hafling village
From spring to autumn it is worth to take a walk along the adventure trail of Hafling to St. Kathrein. Along the interactive and enjoyable path, you can experience everything worth knowing about the Haflinger horses in 12 stations.
7. Kratzbergersee
3:30 h | 11,1 km | Ropeway Meran 2000
With the white sand on the north shore of the lake and the sparkling water surface you might think for a moment to be in the Caribbean, until you put your toe in the water: Brrr, 3 °C! A bit cold for a swimming adventure. Instead it is worth having a picnic and to admire the surrounding mountains from the “Wettersee” …
The "must see" places around Hafling
The seven places that we love in winter
1. The Merano 2000 ski area
When the first snow starts to whiten the streets, ski enthusiasts are quick to put on their boots. In the Merano 2000 ski area you can enjoy the pure pleasure of skiing and snowboarding away from the crowds. There are 40 km of slopes for different levels, a snow park for snowboarders and freestylers, the Alpin Bob, 3 km of toboggan runs and an equally long high-altitude cross-country trail, exposed to the warmth of the sun.
P.S.: No need for your car, a free public shuttle service takes you straight from the Hirzer 2781 to the ski area.
2. Ski tour to the Kuhleiten mountain hut
2:45 h | 7,2 km | Falzeben
If you ask an Hafling sports enthusiast which ski tour gives you the finest views, they're sure to say: the climb up to the Kuhleiten mountain hut. But why is that? The hut stands on a ridge facing Mount Ivigna, and offers stunning scenic views of Salto, Merano and Hafling. It also involves an ascent of around 500 metres. It's not child's play, but it's certainly a very rewarding challenge.
3. Cosy horse-drawn sleigh ride
Sit aboard a horse-drawn sleigh, snugly wrapped in a warm blanket, and ride into the heart of the wild forest and across the snowy plateau. A wonderful experience for families or couples. You can book a sleigh ride at one of the riding stables in Hafling, Verano and Merano 2000.
4. Knottenkino (Natural Cinema)
3:45 h | 12,9 km | Verano
Nature puts on a splendid show here in both summer and winter: the "Knottenkino" rock cinema is a popular viewing platform at any time of year, as it offers stunning views of the Adige Valley, the Dolomites, the Ötztal Alps, and other rocky giants ...
5. Church of Santa Caterina
1:00 h | 4,4 km | from Hirzer 2781
When the winter sun shines on a thick blanket of snow, and the sky is cornflower blue, conditions are perfect for a winter hike to the little mountain church of Santa Caterina "in der Scharte" ("on the saddle"). A beautiful show, and not only in autumn.
6. To the top of Mount Spieler
4:30 h | 12,4 km | Falzeben
Are you looking for a fairly undemanding snowshoe hike? This is it! Mount Spieler is quite easy to climb and offers breathtaking views in every direction. To the east, there are the Dolomites, to the west Mount Mendola and the rocky giants of the Val d'Ultimo and Val Venosta, to the south-west the Brenta Dolomites, and to the north Mount Ivigna. Finish your hike in style with a stop at the Merano mountain hut. By the way: it's well worth doing this hike at sunrise!
7. Speeding through the snow
There are three toboggan runs in and around Hafling, offering lots of fun:
- Merano 2000 natural toboggan run:
0:50 h | 3 km | Merano 2000 upper station / Falzeben
- Sledding trail Leadner Alm:
0:04 h | 0,17 km | Verano
